13 members from throughout the Elkhorn community entered the chili contest, being judged by over 120 cookoff goers who dropped change into the box of their favorite bowl of chili. Jen Christman of Elkhorn was the winner (receiving a funny antacid trophy), and in total the cookoff raised $500 for Operation Christmas Child, a program helping connect Christmas gifts with children in need around the world.
After the meal, everyone enjoyed over an hour of hilarious comedy led by ComedyCity (Green Bay) member Theresa Kaman and a team of amateur performers from the community, including Ted Johnson, Lance Ellsworth, Susan Happersberger, Tom De Groot and Donna Searles.
Tom De Groot, pastor at St. John’s, commented, “The two things people were most surprised about was the fact that the event was “free”, and that it wasn’t “religious”. I was amazed when $500 was raised for Operation Christmas Child. We are thankful to have been able to host a good, clean night of fun for all ages, and are blown away at the generosity of the people who came. And, of course, it was great to leave with our faces hurting from so much laughter.”
The next Elkhorn TGIF event, Thanksgiving Giveway & Scavenger Hunt, will be held on the second Friday, November 8th, at St. John’s from 5:30-7:30pm. The community will again be invited to join in a free event, fun for all ages, as we gather to participate in an interactive community scavenger hunt. Along the way, teams will give away a free gift to the people they encounter. On the free gift will be an invitation to those in need this Thanksgiving to confidentially contact the contact us and receive a free holiday meal basket “with all the fixins’”. Likewise, the invitation will also invite those who are blessed to have a meal this Thanksgiving to consider bringing one food item to be included in these free meal baskets.
Pizza will be available for participants for $1 per slice, and free hot drinks will be provided at Scavenger Hunt locations throughout Elkhorn. There will be something for everyone, from families with young kids to those who cannot leave the church. Go online to www.elkhorntgif.org to register for your free ticket and for more info on this and future events.
