We are currently looking for a Full-time Pastoral Intern starting in the Summer or Fall of 2018.
Emmanuel Lutheran Church is located in a small town with many and diverse learning opportunities for a Pastoral Intern: both a Contemporary (Praise Team) and Traditional Lutheran Service; multiple youth groups ranging from Elementary (GROW-God Rocks On Wednesdays), confirmation (7th and 8th) as well as a strong High School program; two nursing homes, homebound visitation, hospital visitation (both in Greenfield and in Des Moines), as well as opportunities for administrative tasks such as writing for the newsletter, event organization et cetera. The Student Pastor would NOT be expected to take responsibility over any particular ministry, but would be given the opportunity to be a part of MANY ministries to help them lead, learn and interact.
An internship ministry team will be provided to support the pastoral intern and help them learn. This team would be responsible for monthly meetings with the student and would give feedback on various aspects of their ministry including sermons through sermon evaluations.
Duties of the Pastoral Intern would vary based on the Intern's interests and educational needs. For example: On Wednesday nights, He/She might be in charge of confirmation for two months and then lead GROW (God Rocks On Wednesdays) for a month and then lead high school Bible Study for two months to experience how these ministries work. The Pastoral Intern will preach approximately twice a month throughout the year and have opportunities to lead worship at funerals and at nursing homes as well. In addition, they would visit members in their homes, nursing homes and in hospitals. Our Pastor will share the pastoral duties with the pastoral intern including leading worship, preaching, visitation, teaching confirmation et cetera and in addition, he will be supervising the intern and evaluating their progress through weekly meetings as well as quarterly evaluations throughout the year. Our Pastor will be helping the Pastoral Intern understand weekly expectations, spiritual growth opportunities and best practices of being a pastor. The pastoral intern will be held to the same expectations of confidentiality as our Pastor.
We will be providing the following: a monthly undesignated cash stipend of $1,400, adequate furnished housing, plus utilities (where unfurnished housing is provided, moving expenses to and from the seminary are to be provided by the congregation), expenses incurred in the performance of assigned duties such as automobile expenses as stipulated by the IRS, moving expenses, Social Security-.87975% of stipend and housing, health insurance, two weeks' paid vacation for a year's internship and one day per week free time.
